What is it?

LABSA is a liquid organic acid made from petroleum derivatives. On its own it is acidic and corrosive, but when mixed with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) it turns into a powerful cleaning agent that removes grease and stains. This step is called “neutralisation”.

A concentration of 96% means the active matter is almost complete, with very little water and impurities.

Where is it used?

  • Washing powderIts main cleaning agent.
  • Dishwashing liquidRemoves grease; SLES is added for foam.
  • Floor and surface cleanersAll-purpose cleaning products.
  • Industrial cleanersWashing equipment and removing grease.

Storage and safety

A corrosive acidic material
  • Use chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles, and avoid skin contact.
  • Store in plastic or stainless steel containers, tightly closed; it damages ordinary iron.
  • If it touches skin or eyes, wash the area immediately with plenty of water.

Tip when neutralising: the reaction with caustic soda gives off heat, so add the material gradually while stirring constantly.
